Alice Neel

Last Sickness – 1953 – Oil on canvas

I found this painting to be quite interesting as it is a painting of the artists mother a few months before her death. The interesting thing I find about this painting is that it is one of four she painted as Alice Neel probably didn’t want to look back at this painting and remember her own mother in this state. The way you can see the paint strokes are intriguing as you can see most of the strokes that the artist has chosen to use. It is intriguing to look at it in a way that the Neel has encapsulated the time in the painting and an expression which she does quite well looking through out all of all her paintings.
