David Wilkie

Guess My Name – 1821 – Black and red Conté crayon, with graphite, heightened with white chalk on tan laid paper, laid down

David Wilkie’s drawing caught my attention in the way that the hands are over the face and it made me question why are the hands covering the face? who is the person covering the face? what is the relationship between these two people?,  The slight use of red in the drawing I feel like contrasts against the graphite and the tan paper making it seem like the hands are more in the fore ground compared to the face. I love the sketchiness of the drawing and how that contrasts to the hands because they feel a lot more definite and the lines seem sharper compared to the background like the fabric seems a lot more loose and not tight.
