Käthe Kollwitz

Woman with dead child – Berlin 1903 – Etching

The etching by Käthe Kollwitz is compelling as when you look at the print you can sense the pain in the image, the title does help with sensing the pain though because when you first look at the image it does kind of look like the larger figure is devouring the smaller figure, but as soon as you read the title you can sense the mourning in the image and the way the figure is cradling the smaller figure as if they are crying into the figure. The use of etching for this piece I think works very well as you can see all the marks made and the way the ink on the background gives the image some dimension off the paper.
